Jubilee Days

Today it was Jubilee Days at the thrift store.
All clothes were half price.
I didn't find much. A shirt for Famke, and this little Beatrix Potter dress.
The dress was 74 cents.
I hope Famke likes it. If not, I have a big teddy bear who will look smashing in it.

Thrifty Therapy

What. A. Day.

After I picked up THGGM from work, he dropped me off at my second favorite neighborhood thrift store.

I was in need of thrift shopping therapy.

And, this trip did not disappoint!

I found a "Miss Read" book and a French/English dictionary.
Three boxes of old flash cards. Oh! How I LOVE old flash cards. And, a travel Scrabble game. I actually bought it for the cute cute cute tiny wooden letters. Much smaller and thicker than the 'normal' ones. But the game is like new and seems to be complete, so I might just have to leave it alone and travel with it whole.
The books were 99 cents, the flash cards 49 cents and the like new travel Scrabble game for $1.49.
Cheap therapy. I used to pay much more.

Thursday with the Greats

Four generations of women and one energetic Jonge gathered at my house today.
It's been a really rough week for Jonge. His daddy is training for a second job. The training has been every night this week.
But, he got out early tonight.
Oh, you should have seen the reunion!
Son-in-law is a fabulous father and Jonge seems to know just how blessed he is!

Pictures of Jonge, Update on Famke

Famke had her doctor's appointment today. She is 9 lbs. now, and is over her bout with jaundice. She was pronounced to be in perfect health, except for a mild eye infection.

I had ample time to play with Jonge while Daughter and Famke went to the doctor and to the pharmacy.
He enjoys playing with all the 'new' girly things he's never had around before.
He found the pink hair bow in the bathroom, and thought it looked like just the thing for him!
It only took a little coaching for him to turn it into a bow tie, which in Beppe's humble opinion is more appropriate men's wear.

Book Meme

Another meme.

I found this one at Karen's blog http://www.overbackyardfence.blogspot.com/ and thought I would play along.

What are you reading right now?

- I am reading "Song of Years" by Bess Streeter Aldrich. It has a copyright of 1938. The story takes place in Iowa in the mid 1800's. I'm loosing myself in this one, which is just what I needed!

Do you have any idea what you'll read when you are done with that?

- Hopefully I will get my books unpacked next month. My 'to finish' pile was rather deep, but I might throw all caution and careful planning to the wind and start something new. I've had "That Printer of Udells" setting around for quite some time also.

What magazines do you have in the bathroom right now?

- I keep a drawer/crock full of old Christmas magazines in the bathrooms. I haven't moved them in yet, so all that's there now is Reader's Digest and World Magazine.

What's the worst thing you were ever forced to read?

- I don't remember being forced to read anything. Some books read for classes I didn't enjoy, but my guess is that I would now. Being 'forced' to read is the reason I have never joined a book club. I did force myself to finish a few books that I wish I would have just given up on.

What's the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?

- "The Bird in the Tree" by Elizabeth Goudge. Actually, all three in this trilogy. I love them!

Admit it. The librarians at your library know you on a first name basis, don't they?

- No, they don't. I do believe they knew Oldest Son's name when we were homeschooling, but not mine. I used to read a lot of abnormal psychology, so they were probably a wee bit leery of getting to know me.

Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don't like it at all?

- All of my Leanne Payne (non-fiction) books. I LOVE her books! Can't get anyone else even interested in cracking the cover. Through her I discovered the fiction of Elizabeth Goudge. Any friend of Elizabeth Goudge is a friend of mine!

Do you read books while you do other things?

- I used to read while I held Jonge back when he was Baby Boy. Then, he developed a disliking to my holding books and started swatting them out of my hand. I still have a book about Maria Montessori that I carry around with me to read in waiting rooms or if I get stuck in the car somewhere.

When you were little, did other children tease you about your reading habits?

- Not that I remember. I do remember that I had one neighbor friend who was a game show junky. She could never understand why I would rather read than find out what was behind door number three. But, she didn't tease me.

What's the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn't put it down?

- L.M. Montgomery's "Anne's House of Dreams". I'm not a fan of mysteries, but THIS is a great mystery. It stands alone very well, so one could read it without having read the other 'Anne' books, although, I just cannot imagine NOT want to read the other ones too.

Jonge and Famke

Famke ventured out in a skirt for the first time today! She seemed to like it very much.

Jonge is absolutely smitten by her. He wants to 'hold baby' all day long.
She seems to enjoy it. Even picks up her head to look around for him. Or, maybe it's just to see from whence the noise comes.

I Need to Vent

Last week when I visited my parents to organize their meds for the week, they had 'company'.

My dad approached me and whispered that my mom wasn't doing so well. My mom approached me and said that she wanted these people to leave.

I checked her meds and noticed that she hadn't taken her 'last night' pills. Poor mom. No wonder she wasn't doing well. Even I've considered drugs after leaving their house when they have 'company'.

So, I got her a glass of water, handed her the pills and told her she would be tired in 30 minutes. She looked at me and inquired in her quick witted way if I had anything stronger and faster.

She's getting feisty, that mother of mine.

I have some problems 'doing' my parents meds, as they like to talk and I need to think. But, my parents are quiet talkers and avoid ALL controversy in it's many and sundry forms.

Their 'company' does not. They actually shout, and controversy is all they've got.

While trying to calm my mother, alert my father and concentrate on putting dozens upon dozens of tiny white pills into tiny receptacles I was unwillingly held captive to their conversation.

No. It wasn't a conversation at all.

To have a conversation, my parents would have been required to respond or add valuable insights. But, they could not. They tried, but they could not.

The 'company' are three adults from one family. How they haven't driven themselves and each other completely insane is beyond my comprehension. Because, they have a good start on me. And, I want to blame them completely for my mother's dementia. Sometimes I even get angry at my dad, who puts up with it even though my mom cannot handle it at all anymore.

IF it had been an actual conversation, I would try to repeat it. But, since it wasn't, I will do my best. And then, in a very short time, I will delete this post. Today though, I need to vent.

All they do is sing stupid songs that don't mean anything and just keep repeating the same thing over and over. (ummm. those are psalms, last time i checked, His love endures forever repeats often in the psalms) Nobody likes it. (the people that i know who go there like it) And they all come in late. Everybody comes late. (quite possibly this is because they are in conversation with other people about real things) And one guy just can't do it. He needs three other people to stand next to him. THEY DON'T EVEN USE THE HYMNBOOKS ANYMORE. (the 11th commandment?) There aren't even any pews. (because a numb behind is a sign of spiritual maturity?) Just plain old chairs that stack up. That pastor doesn't even preach about heaven and hell. Never hear about heaven or hell. (really. after 75 plus years in church, you still haven't heard enough about heaven or hell?)

Now. Repeat this over and over, becoming louder and louder as you go. Pepper it with 'damns' and 'hells' that aren't necessary ever in any conversation.

My dad did add an invitation to our church, where someone who the 'company' knows was mentioned. This caused snorts and retorts but nothing at all resembling a conversation.

That changed things up a bit. Out of nowhere I started to hear about someone who:

Is no good anymore. (according to who?) No good anymore at all. Bought a motorcycle. (as i recall, you bought a motorcycle once) All he does is ride that motorcycle. Must be a mid-life crisis. (if it's who i think it is, mid-life happened awhile back) What does he do with all his money? (how is his money any of your business?) All that money. (money. why does it always come around to how much money people have?) All he does is ride that motorcycle. (get a clue) He's up to no good. (because motorcycles are inherently evil?) And all that money. (suddenly, i want a motorcycle.)

Okay. Now do the same thing. Repeat. Get progressively louder. Swear more.

Have you ever noticed how the Biblical admonition to 'Love your neighbor' is such a heart warming thought when the 'neighbors' are unknown people that appear in ones imagination? But, the real 'neighbors' that one already knows are so stinking hard to endure. Forever.

Random McRandomness

Just a bit of an update.

I am starting to feel more at home here. Except in the basement, living room and dining room. I've only been in the basement to do laundry. I hope that changes soon, because if I don't start arranging my three rooms of creative space I fear someone else will take it over. As far as the living areas of the basement goes, SOMEONE has made himself at home, as I keep picking up cups, empty containers and other debris. The living room and dining room need a bit more living and dining going on before it will feel like 'mine'. I'm hosting a bridal shower for my niece this weekend, so that might help too.

Famke is doing very well. She is filling out rather nicely, and I noticed no yellow tones to her skin yesterday. She sees the doctor again on Wednesday.

My mom continues to have good parts of the day and bad parts of the day. Yesterday northern sister and brother-in-law stopped over after having had dinner with them. They reported all to be well. My southern sister came shortly after, and said that when she arrived she found my mom wandering around the parking lot looking for my dad. Dad was in the basement watching a ball game. I doubt that their condo development will go for adding invisible fencing, so we will have to come up with a 'plan b' in the very near future.

THGGM is still working like a mad man around here. I am still unpacking boxes. Pantry organization is in progress. This weekend we bought all those little household items that were necessary to this house.

Our bedroom and the guest room have been pronounced finished. The outside awnings have been painted, and shutters are being added.

Both main floor bathrooms have wallpaper in different degress of 'peeledoffedness'. If I don't get it done in time for the shower, I will simply paint on the walls 'picture this white'.

I've added a new symptom to my long list of physical complaints. Friday night while THGGM and I were out and about, I mentioned to him that it hurt to turn my neck to the right. I chalked this up to having held a tiny baby all week while lovingly staring into her dreamy eyes. Well. I do not think that is what it was. Saturday morning I woke up and could hardly move. As the day wore on it got a little better. Sunday I woke up almost immobile. It took much longer and a few rounds of an anti-inflammatory to get me moving. By afternoon I could move without wincing. Seriously, it feels like every joint is involved - except for my knees. Which, one would think since at least one of them always hurts that they would join in the party too.

It is THGGM who has been dangling from ladders, trimming trees, painting inside and out - but he feels fine. Could the difference between being 48 and 49 really be that great? I think not.

Anyway.

Jonge has learned something new. Oldest Son taught him a magic trick. He puts a tiny ball in his hand, and then puts the hand with the ball behind his back and holds the empty hand out to his side while hunching up his shoulders in a 'where is it?' sort of pose. Next he pulls the hand with the ball out from behind him. That's your clue to clap. Clap good and long.

All About THGGM (a meme)

Who is your man? - THGGM. Sometimes I call him "Hon", sometimes, Attila. Other people call him Steve, although many many refer to him as "Eddie".

How long have you been together? - We have been married for 29 years.

How long did you date? - Four years.

How old is your man? - 48 years old. Younger than I am.

Who eats more? - He does, but I run a very close second.

Who said "I love you" first? - He did.

Who is taller? - He is.

Who sings better? - That would be him. But I read music, and he doesn't.

Who is smarter? - He is.

Whose temper is worse? - Mine. I've been known to throw stuff in anger. He stuffs his anger.

Who does the laundry? - We both do. He does it better, because he cares more.

Who does the dishes? - Maytag.

Who pays the bills? - He does.

Who has bigger feet? - Him.

Who has longer hair? - Me.

Who is better with the computer? - He sits at a computer most of the day, and has even taught some classes. When he gets home he does not want to even look at a computer. I guess that means he is better overall, but I am better on this one.

Who mows the lawn? - He does. And he LOVES it. He mows patterns into the grass.

Who cooks dinner? - If dinner is cooked, that would be me. Although, he does know how.

Who pays when you go out? - He does. I get all discombobulated out in public.

Who is most stubborn? Him. Although he would deny it. My answer stands firm.

Who is first to admit when they are wrong? - Him. He even thinks he is wrong when he isn't.

Whose parents do you see the most? - Mine.

Who kissed who first? - He did. March 23, 1974

Who asked who out? - He ask me and a friend both out. The plan was that we were BOTH supposed to say 'yes', and then what would he have done? (ohhh...donna.....you owe me...!)

Who proposed? - I believe I said something like "I'm not waiting forever, you know."

Who is more sensitive? - He is much more of a 'feeler', so I believe the award goes to him. BUT on the other hand, you do not want to mess with me during 'hormone hell' week.

Who has more friends? - He does.

Who wears the pants in the family? - Him. I am his chief cabinet adviser. Anyway, he would look just plain silly in a skirt.

Four Months Until...

Christmas!

Do YOU know where YOUR gift ideas are?

I certainly don't.

Hopefully, I will find it all, and soon.

I've learned that if I don't have the majority of it done in September, it won't get done.

Let's see what I accomplish in the next month.

First, I have to locate all of my supplies...

A Story of a Boy and His Beppe's Cat

Thursday With the Greats!

Daughter, Jonge and Famke came to my house today!
I went to Daughter's this morning, and we loaded them up and brought them here.

Great Grandpa and Great Grandma came over too.
For a minute there it felt like Judy's Home for post-partum recovery, bilirubin light therapy, elder respite, toddler delinquents (there was an episode of me chasing a toddler who was brandishing a steak knife) and a woman in middle-aged-fatigue (that would be me).

My dad, whose medical records would make one wonder how he is still alive was the one in the best shape.
The rest of us all required naps. Frequent potty breaks. And a 'comfy' of some sort - be it a binky, a blanky, coffee or a favorite pink sweater on a 90 degree day.
But, not my dad. He went out for lunch with friends.
More power to him!

Famke the Glo-Worm

Yes. She still glows.
Today, Famke had her foot poked again.
Her levels have not yet dropped below 10, but are very very close.
She will be a glo-worm through Friday.
Although she looks very much like her brother did at this age, she has the disposition of her mother as a baby. Very sweet, calm and peaceful.

The Grandkids

When I arrive at Daughter's house in the mornings, I get to watch her home wake up. It's really quite fun. Watching morning PBS with Jonge and Elmo is always a treat!

Famke is adored by Jonge.
He likes to hold her and give her kisses.
She moves her head to follow his voice.

Things seem to be going very well.
Famke is still attached to her glo-worm pad.
It certainly makes her easy to find in a dark room!
Tomorrow she has blood drawn again.
Her doctor wants the bilirubin count to drop below 10 before he lets her lose the glo-worm pad.
Hopefully, tomorrow she will pass that mark.

Repainting the Bedroom

This is what THGGM is doing tonight.
Repainting the bedroom.
It was just too screaming yellow.
So, it is presently becoming the color which appears over the window.
It's actually the color of one of my favorite shirts.
I think we will use this same color in the kitchen.

Here and There In the Guest Room

Moving is exhausting.
Moving times three is three times exhausting.

Slowly, ever so sloooooooowly, we are getting settled.
Truly, there seems to be not enough hours in the day.
Son-in-law went back to work this week, so I am going to Daughter's house each day to 'help'.
Daughter is doing very well. New Baby Famke is still a little glo-worm.
Her lab test today showed that she will need to be attached to her power source at least until Wednesday.

It doesn't seem to bother Famke at all, but it is difficult for Daughter to move around with a baby that looks something like a vacuum cleaner attachment.

In the evenings I've been trying to set up the guest room.

I believe my most frequent guests will be Famke and Jonge - formerly known as New Baby and Baby Boy.

Lately I've been wondering if I will EVER get into all those boxes marked 'basement books' and 'basement art room'.

But, I don't mind. It is MUCH more enjoyable to cuddle with a glo-worm and her equally cuddly brother.

Omelet Bar

Saturday morning we had an omelet bar at our house.
Oldest Son saw Paula Dean make these on her show.
They sounded too good to be true.
This is what we did:

Whisk together two eggs.
Pour the eggs into a sealable sandwich bag.
Add whatever ingredients you like in your omelet.
Moosh it all together in the sandwich bag.
Seal.
Drop sealed sandwich bag into boiling water.
One or two take just a few minutes. We did nine at a time in a large pot of boiling water, so it took about 10 minutes.
I wish I had a picture of the finished omelet on a plate.
They looked truly AMAZING and were FABULOUS.
I tried to get a picture of all of the 'additions' we had available, but I think that first picture gives you an idea. We had ham, cheese, tomato, sauteed mushrooms, green pepper, onion and sausage.
This is the perfect idea for someone like me, who cannot resist stirring the scrambled eggs which causes them to turn out gross.

She's a Sweet Heart!

I Don't Feel 'At Home' Here, Yet.

I thought I did, but not yet.

I still feel as if I need to ask someone if I want to pick a flower, or something.

THGGM is missing his porch swing. It's sitting outside the breeze-way, but he hasn't found the studs to hang it yet.

Tonight, the strangely different ways that THGGM and I cope with stress are apparent.

He is watching 'So You Think You Can Dance'. He has them all on the DVR, and it is unending.

I don't 'get' dancing. If he thinks there is something really great, he will call me in to watch it.

I watch. Nod my head, and say something profound, like 'cool!' But I don't get it.

He doesn't get me.

He actually left his viewing to see who was in the kitchen with me.

No one.

I deal with stress in totally different ways than he does.

I was listening to 'The Lord's Prayer' being read in Frisian. Over and over.

Sometimes, it's just nice to hear a voice that sounds like grandpa. Both of them.

Then, in some odd search I was on, I found a tiny bit of 'Meike and Nina' singing The Windmill song in Dutch. My high school twin friends, John and Anna had this album. Now I want to order it. Except, they sing terribly. I cannot believe they weren't drug out and shot. But, I'm longing for all things old and familiar...

Now it seems that I should ask someone if it's okay for me to go to bed.

I'm tired. My head is throbbing.

My mom is coming tomorrow. I'm not sure if I should tell her that her identical twin sister was just diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Would she remember?

Life.

It's just so daily.

Beppe and Her Little Famke

I suppose that New Baby needs a name, and since I'm not comfortable using her real name, I thought I should find something comparable to the Frisian word for Grandma, which is Beppe.
So, this is Famke. It's the Frisian word for girl.

Glo-Worm Is Home

New Baby is home, again.
She came home with a cute little glo-pad which makes her easy to find in her bed.
The blood she had drawn today shows that her numbers are dropping, which is good.
Hopefully by her test on Friday the results will be great and she can glow on her own.

Still There

It's taking a little longer than the expected 24 hours for New Baby's numbers to go down.
It was 18, then dropped to 14, but then went up to 15. Going up means she required an extra six hours.
Hopefully, if the number goes back down, she will come home from the hospital with a special blanket for jaundice.

Baby Boy has been staying with us.
We took him out for dinner and a ride on the carousal. That's him whizzing by in the red striped shirt.

He is a very good little boy.
It's amazing to me how the contents of one's purse changes over the course of life...

Looks Like a Smile!

New Baby is back in the hospital.
She is very jaundiced.
Hopefully, 24 hours under the light should be all she needs.
But, since only time will tell, they are testing her blood for whatever else could be the cause.
Her poor tiny little feet.

This and That

The living room is coming together nicely. The mirror with the hymns that we had at our other house just did not fit anywhere here.

So, THGGM came up with this idea, which seems to be a good one. The mirror is in the entry way, three of the hymns are propped up on the piano and one is hung on the other side of the doorway.

THGGM found an old dresser at a friends yard sale. I've claimed it as my own. Even though he pointed out that he discovered it, bought it and hauled it over here and into the house. It's mine.

And, for those of you who are wondering how Baby Boy is doing amid all of the New Baby excitement, he is fine.
A bit dazed and confused, but aren't we all?

She Is SOOOO Sweet!

New Baby arrived at her new home this afternoon.
Daughter called and asked if we could bring up her car seat, as they hadn't thought to bring it with them (they were expecting her to arrive by c-section on monday).
Anyway...

THGGM dropped me off at the door and parked.
As he was carrying in the car seat someone asked him if this was 'his first'.
To which he replied 'first grand daughter!'
Things like this are always happening to him. Except, of course, when he is with ME. I have looked like a grandma for quite sometime now.
New Baby is experiencing some jaundice. Monday she needs to have some blood drawn to make sure things are heading in the right direction.

They've Still Got It!

We took "The Greats" to the hospital tonight to meet their first great grand daughter. Baby Boy didn't seem to mind all the attention given to New Baby. On the drive home we decided that we should do this every year!

New Baby!

She is sixteen hours old in this picture.
In those sixteen hours she has been nothing but adorable.
She nurses well, sleeps well and, well, does everything else well too!
