I feel deep sadness for the victims of hurricane Katrina. I feel deep sadness for the victims of the flooding when the levy broke. But, I feel something more intense than deep sadness for the victims of the criminals who preyed upon the people during this time of unbelievable pain, loss and confusion.
One of the bodies found in the 'dead body room' at the New Orleans Convention Center was that of a seven year old girl. Her throat was slit.
As my mind frantically attempts to sort out the terribleness of natural dissasters, man made bunglings of waterways, and the whole problem of logistics in organizing aid, there is just NO PLACE to put the needless murder of a little girl.
Someone tell me when we are going to begin to put away criminals and either actively work to rehabilitate them, or lock them up and throw away the key.
I have never felt that the citizenry should be armed. But, if I were the parent of the seven year old girl, I could have thought of a place or two to point my gun.
Yes, I know, there but for the grace of God go I. But still.
How did this happen?

It's evil; there is no explanation, and it doesn't fit.
Well, she likely was raped too...read an article a few days ago by an Australian who escaped the worst of that place by figuring out early on what was going on, locating others who were foreigners (all 65 of them) banding together and staying in a group and not letting anyone harm anyone in their group. Said he thought 98% of most of the world was good (I would not go that high) but in that coleseum 98% were bad...also overly high because I saw plenty of old, children, and handicapped that would hurt no one there...but still emphasizes what kind of people at least were there. Those who have been in New Orleans say it truely was Sodom and Gomorrah...think what you will...of course, the innocents are always part of such places as well.
Personally, I believe 2 crimes deserve the death penalty...murder and rape (because it ruins lives just as surely as if the life was taken already, especially when it is a young child)!! God help us! The stench must have reached His nostrils.
Pray over the Carolinas too please....looks like this next hurricane may well land in one of these states. We have our Sodom and Gomorrah here too...called Charlotte....Raleigh too...sigh....

Elizabeth, I hope hurricane Ophelia falls apart before it hits land!
I saw a report from a man who had been evacuated to and then from the Superdome with his wife and children. He had personally witnessed rapes and murders.
I think his question said it all - "Where were the men?" - said with deep grief and unbelievable sadness.
Personally, I fear far more the Sodom and Gomorrah in hearts than in cities.
Well, plenty of it to go around huh? The evil that is.
My hubby corrected me...it is not Charlotte...it is Asheville I meant to say...sigh...old brains!
