Today THGGM wanted to go to a particular furniture store. I happily went along, as I knew there was a thrift store across from it that I hadn't been to in over a year.
So glad I did! I found FOUR Sandra Boynton books that I do not have! Baby Boy will be SO excited too! And if that isn't cool enough, I found a board book with Eloise Wilkins pictures, and a Bob the Builder book and one of Bible songs.
I was DELIGHTED to have stopped there. I really didn't look at anything else BUT books. I practiced my new way of shopping in which I only buy what I am planning to use NOW. As in, THIS year.
I also found a copy of Frederick Manfred's book "Green Earth". I had it in my hand, hoping that it maybe had an inscription or an autograph. While I was looking at it, a sales clerk came up to me and engaged me in conversation about this book. She told me that the author was born in Doon, Iowa just down the road from where she was born. I told her that I was always looking for his books, as he is a relative of my husband. I just love making unsolicited connections like that.
I am almost finished with Wendell Berry's "Remembering", so I have no excuse not to start this book next. After all, the woman at the thrift store said it was GREAT.
Oh, and I thought this was interesting. This particular thrift store promotes itself as an 'up scale' thrift store. Up scale? It's still somebody's used stuff. I cannot imagine how a thrift store could be 'up scale'. Better Junk, More Expensive would be a more honest description.
Has anyone else noticed that thrift store prices are climbing? I just may have to become a weird garage sale lady. I can count on one hand how many garage sales I have gone to since the turn of the century. For some reason, I do not like them.

There was an article in a recent Sunday paper here about the rising costs of the resale shops. Sort of defeats the purpose.
Ohhhh!! I see an elephant on the front of one of those books! Don't let Baby Boy see!

I am with you...I like thrift stores better than yard sales too.
We have those four Boynton books (we have most but not all of her books - someday - I am going to embroider one of those adorable hippos on something). We have that Eloise Wilkins (I love her stuff - I pick it up whenever i can) and we have that singing bible book.
I love kids books.
Personally, I would have liked to hear more about the Wendell Berry book.
We have "Value Village" thrift stores here in Portland and, if you're not careful, sometimes you can end up spending more for an item at THEIR prices than you would in a retail store!! I usually buy my Garden Art items and toys for Dylan there, especially on their 'half-off' color tags. Otherwise, I don't buy clothes there much any more. Goodwills have gone up some, too, but there's one store Dear Hubby and I especially love whose prices are REALLY good and we don't tell many people about that one! As far as yard sales, I hardly ever purposely stop at any but if I'm driving by and something on display catches my eye, I'll pull up and go look. I find a lot of the sales out in the more rural areas on the outskirts of Portland have GREAT yard/garage sales and if we're out moseying around and spot some on a Saturday, we'll drop by. Dear Hubby got a smoking deal on a canvas tent one year!
Goodwill, here, had a fifty per cent off sale yesterday. It was a chilly, rainy day, but the store was full of people. I was looking for picture frames.I found two great carved wood frames, as well as a wonderful water pitcher, that matches my glasses, a nice wall clock (Citizen, collector series) and a chimney for an oil lamp. I spent $8.50 for everything, and was in the store for about ten minutes.
One of the frames has a print of a leopard in it. I decided to keep it intact, and give it to grandson number one, who will love it. That "Baby Boy" is in third grade now!

I used to have the "My Little Book About God" when I was a little girl. I remember I thought the girl on the front cover was so pretty and I wished I had a daisy crown like hers.
thrift stores are getting way too trendy. Yard sales can score you BIG TIME and I'm sure I'll be posting those pics come spring.
So, Yes, I am one of those weird "ladies".
