Dumber than a Box of Rocks?

I don't think so.

It works for me, anyway, so I thought I would pass the idea on to you.

My mind has a tendency to wander when I pray. If I haven't something to 'ground' me my thoughts wander off into the various and sundry ways that God might choose to answer a specific prayer.

So, to help me stay focused, I write names on rocks. Of course, there is a lot of imagery with writing someone's name on the 'rock'. Even more imagery with the Old Testament tradition of standing stones as reminders of past provisions.

For what it's worth, I find it helpful.

Each of these has it's own unique feel, so even in the dark, I know whose it is.

I also find it helpful to pray the Lord's Prayer for each person. If you've ever wondered what a person needs, it's all in there.

I've read dozens of books on prayer, mostly helpful ones (elisabeth elliot and leanne payne come to mind), but nothing has ever come close to the simplicity of praying how Jesus said to.

Judy, I have never come across such a beautiful idea in my entire life. Beautiful isn't even the right word, but it's the best I could come up with. I know it's a trick of the devil to try and get our minds wandering whenever we take the time to pray. To have found something like these rocks to help you keep focused is an amazing thing. Our church has a website and we can go to it weekly to get a printed-out prayer list for our churches around the world and individual prayer requests, too but, like you said, something like that can't be read in the dark. No matter how 'thoroughly' I pray, I still always come away feeling like I missed something or someone. At least with something like your 'rock box' you know everyone in THERE has been covered. This just takes my breath away. I'm going to show it to Dear Hubby who is such a faithful 'prayer warrior'...every morning, 365 days a year, he's down in his den reading his Bible and praying for an hour. If we were ALL like him, just imagine what the world would be like!

Ooooo... I LIKE this idea! I've been thinking of buying (or making) prayer beads to help me stay focused, but I like the rock idea even more.

Trouble is, I'll have to wait until Spring before I find any rocks in these parts!
