Today?

Today.

THGGM spent the day working on my dad's condo. He painted trim and matched paint chips to the carpet.

Me? The day was spent at home. A week ago Tuesday was the last time I left the house. Certainly I must be better by now. One would think, anyway.

My task for today was to take down all the overtly "Merry Christmas" decor, yet leave a hopeful feeling of lights and winter themed things to cheer up the place as we settle in for the real "long winter's nap".

That didn't last too long. No matter what I seem to do, after a few minutes of doing it I feel soooo tired. So, I took it sloooowly and managed to get a few things accomplished. My quest to take pictures of it all didn't go as I had hoped, so just trust me on this.

Since our plan was to eat at home on this vacation, THGGM had been doing all of the cooking. He knows his way around a kitchen, so we've been getting along just fine. But, today I thought I'd make something for dinner in stages. To begin with I threw a roast into the crock pot. Can't go wrong with that. While I was getting the potatoes and carrots ready I thought how nicely a loaf of home made bread would go with a meal like this, so I got out my artisan bread recipes, only to realize that I hadn't started soon enough.

Thankfully, I've been pouring over stacks of magazines recently and I remembered seeing a recipe for Irish Soda bread. The recipe was in the most recent issue of MaryJane's Farm. 10 minutes prep, 40 minutes to bake, and 5 minutes to cool.

So, there you have it! I managed to muster up the strength to cook a meal! Oh, yes. I must be better now. Good thing, as three lively grandchildren will arrive here early tomorrow morning and I must be up to the challenge.

Now, AFTER the meal I pointed out to THGGM that I didn't have any energy left for clean-up. I'm sure that caused him to stifle a laugh. In my normal condition I am slow to clean-up. LOVE making those messes though.

Anyway.., he was happy to clean up.

And then, he took a nap. All that food. Need nap.

He had been asleep about 40 minutes when from behind a closed door at the other end of the house I smelled something burning.

I rushed screaming from the room which woke him from a sound sleep.

There was no smoke, just an EXTREMELY strong smell of burning wood - like a campfire.

He ran downstairs to sniff it out down there. My first stop was the stove top, oven, crock-pot, and all of the lights.

Nothing. I opened the doors, but it didn't smell at all outside.

Then, I popped open the dishwasher. I saw a wooden spoon laying on the bottom and pulled it out, but it was still wet.

Then, the burning smell got stronger and I pulled out the bottom rack.

There, laying on the heating element was another wooden spoon with a nicely toasted handle.

Mystery solved. Tragedy averted. Lesson learned.

That's a pretty exciting finale.

I have a wooden spoon that matches yours at my house.

Oh yes, I have burned those wooden spoons in the dishwasher also. You cooked more in a not well state than I do most days feeling perfectly fine. I may get back to it someday, but for now I have used up most my alloted cooking time. Continue to get well.
