While Sorting Buttons

My mom had a big tin of buttons and one of the joys of my childhood was picking through the button tin.  That button tin disappeared a long time ago, but I've got enough tins and enough buttons to fill several like hers, so today I did that.
This afternoon while the little boys napped I got out a button tin for Famke to enjoy.  And enjoy she did!
And I am sure that you already know that I did too.
Her favorites were the pink and lavender ones.

Mine where the mother of pearl and the leather ones.

It was thrilling for her to sort them by color.

I found a gold one which had on it what looked to be a lion running.  To me it was very cool.  She wasn't all that impressed.

But then she broke into our button fun with this story that the lion button "memembered" her of.

Famke:  Maybe it's a leopard.  Jonge is going to catch a leopard today.

Me:  He is?  Where?

Famke:  I think at school. He had to wear special clothes to catch a leopard.

Me:  OOOOhhh  (i say that a lot).

Back we went to our button sorting.

After about ten minutes and much lively conversation I found a few green buttons, which "memembered" me of clover which in turned caused me to say that it would be St. Patrick's day tomorrow and that she should wear green so nobody would pinch her (she is, after all, part Irish from the McKenzie/Dunn side of the family).

Suddenly her eyes brightened (like in the picture).

Famke:  Oh!  That's the special clothes Jonge has to wear.  A green shirt.  To catch a leopard!

Me:  Do you mean to catch a leprechaun?

Famke:  Maybe.  But I don't know what that is.

So while sorting more buttons and ooooing and ahhhhing over their beauty we talked about leprechauns, wearing green, pinching, and pots of gold.

We seemed to arrive at the consensus that catching a leopard would be much more exciting.

But probably not as exciting as sorting buttons.  At least in my opinion.

Oh, the things that get thrown away at the TV programm Hoarders. If you did not have the tin of buttons, Famke would still not understand about leopards and leprechauns. There is a line between junk (empty saladcontainers, papers from consumed sweets and carloads of empty pizzaboxes) and stuff, that comes in usefull at unexpected times. The first you must get rid of, sometimes easier said then done, MIL rememberd WWII and could not live without at least 10 of each of the junk in her home), the second must be tucked safely away till you need them. Did Jonge catch the leprechaun? I am Dutch, but I am often told there is a streak of Celtic in my brain, don't know, love all kinds of Celtic music, bagpipes, bodhrans, harpes, Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder, so maybe. DM Reading the not a robot word is like reading the name of that Welsh place with the longest villagename in the world

I had no one to help me sort buttons last week. I purchased an old tin full of them and started in myself. I didn't complete the job and in my haste to prepare for company, just tossed them back together again for another "sorting" day...

I say "oooooooooh" a lot, too. It works in many, many conversations, doesn't it?

Ahh, loved this post and the story. My mom had a big tin of buttons also and I don't know what happened to it. I sure wish I had it. I won a tin of buttons at Nancy Jo's blog. I love it! I am going to keep my eye out for buttons at garage/yard sales this spring and summer. Wish me luck!
