A Good Day for Ice

For several years now I've wanted to try this idea.

This year the timing seemed right.

One needs just a few simple things to make this.

A dozen or two plastic animals (mine all came from the thrift store), a pan or two (again, from the thrift store), water, and a freezer.

To help keep the animals in place, I first added a very small amount of water so that the first layer of animals weren't floating.

My freezer is a bottom drawer so I simply filled the pan in there and waited for a layer to freeze and added the next layer in the same way.
Now the BEST way to do this is to squirt at it with luke warm water.

All my sprayers were in use.

Jonge found that a fork was rather effective, but I would not recommend this.  Especially due to the simple fact that in such a cold environment it wouldn't be too hard to stab a finger and never even feel it.

Although no one did.  I worry.
Much of the ice just melted in the heat.

Setting it on the patio table also helped to keep the feet cool as the water just dripped on through.
And what JOY when one frees their favorite animal!
If the whole processes begins to get tedious, just have your sister come over and sing to you.

Famke sang yesterday.  All day.  Funny little songs prompted by her oldest brother.
I'll be doing this again, although with spray bottles.

This could also be fun in the pool.

I might try it with fish next time.
Even an Aunt got in on the fun!

I posted this picture because DiL1 has the most beautiful antique wedding ring set.  I love it!  It's been on her hand for nearly nine years now.

And now I notice that Famke is still singing in this picture.

Yesterday was THGGM and my thirty-fourth anniversary.

We spent it with all eleven of our favorite people in the entire world.

We did this often when I worked in early childhood center. Great for the water table or setting in the wading pool on water play day.

I haven't done much of this at home with the littles yet but it's on my list for this summer. I recently found a huge amount of animals/bugs at a yard sale that will be fun to use!

Wow! What a great idea. I'm going to put it on my Pinterest board for ideas for grandchildren (unless you say "don't").

And Famke singing. That is such a hoot! I hope she keeps it up--all her life!

Congratulations. It must have been fun to have an - almost - homegrown one-gitl-band singing for you all day long. You will be using plastic fish next time, I hope. Yes, you will, I know. D M

I love the last picture, Famke singing in the background. What a happy way to spend an anniversary!
