Last Week Sunday

We had plans to spend Sunday morning visiting with my aunt and her family.  But the weather had other, more sinister plans.  THGGM watched the news on Saturday night in our hotel and announced in an authoritative voice (which he doesn't usually do) that we were going to leave at 8:00 in an attempt to beat the storms.  I was angry to say the least.  To whom that anger was directed is still up for negotiation.  I'm still not over it.
But, it was certainly the RIGHT thing to do.  After dropping my sister off at her home in Kalamazoo we stopped at the Plainwell McDonalds for coffee.  The news on the TV there was all about the tornadoes in Illinois.  People were gathered around it, calmly stating who they knew in the path.  Back in the car, the radio reports were of severe storms coming over Lake Michigan.  I called my other sister who lives in the path of the storm who said that they were ALMOST home and the rain was picking up.  We made it home just before the wind and rain hit us.  The last picture is about half a mile from our house.  It got very windy, but all we lost were branches.  The area shown in this picture was out of power for several days.  My sister made it home in time to get into her basement as a tornado passed over their house.  My sister in Kalamazoo called me just a bit later to ask if I had heard that nearly every area we had just passed through had sustained major damage due to the wind.  So, yes, I am feeling incredibly thankful that we all made it home safely.  But I must confess that I still feel cheated out of a pleasant Sunday morning with my family on the other side of Lake Michigan.  I'll get over it.  Eventually.  Maybe.

I am glad THGGY was authoritative.
