The Caledonia

Since reading the book "Island of Hope, Island of Tears" I've been thinking more and more about my grandparents who came to this country through Ellis Island.

Why is it that we never talked about this?

My grandpa was only three when he came here from Sexbierum, The Netherlands, so it's understandable that he would not have remembered much.

My mom and aunt used to talk about how he said that all he remembered was the smell.  After reading the accounts of other people who came across the Atlantic, that seems to be a common memory at the time.

I wonder if he felt sad when he had to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to Wilhelmina the Queen of the Netherlands?  Hopefully he broke no international law by eating her fine peppermints.

He never went back.  I wonder if he wanted to?  My other grandfather went to 'the old country' several times and even died there rather unexpectedly on what would turn out to be his last visit.

I only wish I had asked more questions.

As I read this over and over, I wonder whether if this sailing across the ocean was made out to be an adventure or was everyone somber and he in turn was scared.
:0( There are so many stories left untold by our ancestors.

I have a hope that got that God will let us tour His Creation and History when we reach heaven - then we will learn so much.

If not at least we can ask those who lived it.

Me too! My g-grandmother on my mom's side came over as a child from Scotland. My grandmother on my dad's side lived in a tipi up in the mountains with her parents. I did get to ask her some question but I wished I'd asked a lot more when she was younger and could hear better : )

That is so cool that you have that certificate in such good shape.
