Sadly, we've no money to play around with this weekend. Everything is taken up with bills. Actually, William's are more like it - they're too big for a nickname like Bill.
But, I did do pretty well at my neighborhood thrift store, which has had it's books for 25 and 10 this week.
For 10 cents each I got a copy of "Traveling Mercies" by Anne Lamott, so now I have a copy that I am willing to loan out. I also found a copy of Dan Allender's "The Wounded Heart". I had one from a seminar I went to, but The Husband God Gave Me loaned it out to someone who later moved to Texas.
In the 25 cent hardcover category I got "The Family Album" by Ruth C. Tucker, which is subtitled 'Portraits of Family Life through the Centuries'. It's an amazing resource full of great quotes, which I always enjoy. Fannie Flagg is rapidly becoming a favorite author of mine. I found a copy of "Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!" which I'm looking forward to getting into, as since I finished her "Standing in the Rainbow" I've been missing Neighbor Dorothy. And, I found a fabulous first edition (1911) Fannie Merritt Farmer of the Boston Cooking School book, "Catering for Special Occasions". It has a great picture on the cover, and it is green (i pile green books all over my living room).
I also found a wooden box with eight of the nine CD's of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. They were $1.49. I wanted the box, the CD's were just a bonus.
I'm getting really good at being poor.
I spent Saturday night making oreo desserts for the dad's in my family. One with regular oreos and one with mint oreos. They were incredible, as our the dads.

You do have some great ideas, Judy!! Now just a way to make money from having them, eh?
The desserts sound decadent and yummy!!
We have not done anything much...but then we rarely do for most "holidays"...we are too tired to do so this week anyway, having just returned from a weeklong jaunt across the continent. Flying is enough to make anyone nearly die...they did try to cook us alive, but we survived anyway!

What's oreo dessert?
Hello! I've been enjoying your blog for some time now but haven't commented until now. I have two questions:
1. Will you please share the oreo dessert recipe!
2. I too live in W. Mich. (Grand Rapids). Can you share the name of your favorite thrift stores?
I'll post the oreo dessert recipe above.
Now, for Barbara in W. Mich... My favorite thrift stores...My all time favorite is Valueland on Burlingame just north of 28th St. I'm in there just about everyday - never for long, just to check out what's new. There is also a Valueland on 4 Mile, just west of Alpine, but their prices are a bit higher. On 28th St. between Byron Center and Ivanrest are two other thrift stores, I go to those less frequently. I also hit Goodwill and the Salvation Army from time to time.
Do you know of others? Please post them here!
I love Valueland too! I go to the one off from Alpine, but never have tried the one near 28th. Have you tried Love's Treasures in Hudsonville? They have a lot of neat stuff. There's a Love Inc. store in Allendale as well, but not as good stuff but VERY CHEAP prices. In fact, they had a yard sale last weekend and we got 3 boxes of books for $3! (We collect books) We also find out when/where the library used book sales are and find tons of great books there too. There's a fabulous one every year on the 4th of July at Cascade branch. Sorry, I could go on and on.
Barbara, thank you! I haven't heard of those!
The 28th St. Valueland has hardcover books for 25 cents and children's books and paperbacks for 10 cents most Wednesday's.
They don't have near the volume as some of the other stores, but I have gotten some fantastic deals there. If someday you hear on the news about a house in Wyoming Park that collapsed due to too many books...that will be mine...
Calling bills 'Williams' actually comes from an episode of the English comedy "Good Neighbors" which I'm told has a different title in England.
