While putting gas into our car this week, THGGM was approached by a man. At this particular gas station it seems to happen quite often that people ask for money. Usually, it's for money for gas, milk or something for a sick baby at home. Often THGGM will give money, but only when he senses that God is telling him to.
He felt no such nudge this time. The man asked him for money to rent a DVD. When THGGM told him that he carries no cash, the man's expression brightened and he ask if he would buy him a pack of cigarettes!
Of course I was watching this all transpire from the side view mirror. The man was of a slight build, so I wasn't worried. Unless of course he were to pull out a knife or a gun. Then, I would have leaped from our vehicle in a single bound. I would have thrown myself between THGGM and this man, giving my life if necessary. Not because I am such a noble person, but because there is NO WAY on this earth that I plan to move all of these boxes I am packing by myself. 'Nough said.
Anyway...
I can only think of a few things for which I would beg:
Peanut M&M's
Rubber Stamps
Back issues of "Home Companion" magazine (think ebay)
Next time THGGM is pumping gas, I think I'll give it a try.

Somebody to come to the junkstore with me and pay for my purchase. Somebody to watch the girls for half a day.
Generally my hubby and I must look like easy hits, as often we have been asked for money. We generally give a person something. And a few times have felt led to give money to a complete stranger, without being asked. One time the person even refused...my husband simply left the money beside the man (with quite a few children in tow) and said, "The Lord told me to give you this, so take it and talk to HIM about it.") We have had some very lean years ourselves and though never hungry (peanut butter and homemade burritos are pretty filling), we can identify with those who are in trouble. That was a strange request of your husband however...and NOT necessary expense. There are jobs out there if one wants one... people need to work for what they want.
I had to laugh at the last part of your post, not moving the boxes yourself! I would agree, I would most definitely beg for peanut M&M's and the HOme Companion is a good one, too. I would also beg for a Starbucks, sad as that is.
Your story reminded me of a time my son and I were out and a woman approached us for gas money. I declined to give her any, as was my habit to do so back then. As she walked away, my son admonished me. I replied, "Well, if you want to give her the money I was going to use to take you out to lunch, go ahead." He eagerly grabbed the money and ran over to give it to the woman. She truly looked down and out, her car looked like it was on its last mile. I have to say, my son taught me a lesson that day. I'm not an easy target, but I've learned to be more discerning in those situations.
Hmmm, who could I beg a Starbuck's from today??
I am so relieved to know that I'm not the only one who isn't above begging!
I must add that I dared not beg for ANYTHING the last time THGGM pumped gas.
It was that Trailblazer we had as a loaner for a couple of days.
We could have fed, clothed and educated a child in a third world country for what it cost us in gas those two days.
Good grief.
Maybe I'll resort to my begging idea next week...
