Thrifting and Tweaking

Saturday was our annual St. Nicholas family party. This year, Daughter and Son-in-law hosted.
I was able to find the linen napkins earlier in the day. Twelve of them. Since I already have dozens of napkins, some not even unpacked yet, I snatched these up to give to Daughter. The reindeer was a nice touch, too.
Dinner was wonderful. Roast Beast. Yum.
Oldest Son made a traditional Dutch dessert. Almond Butter Cake. More nummy.

I have been searching through boxes in my garage looking for my Advent calendar, like this one. Daughter wanted to use it this year. She even delved into boxes of what-not trying to locate it.
I found this one at a thrift store for fifty cents. It was missing the little mouse that counts down the days, but, this little blue puppy finger puppet will have to do this year, until I can sew a little mouse to take it's place.
I did so well at the one thrift store I went to this week. And, oh, the things I put back!
I want extra credit for that. For putting things back.

Most of my Christmas postcards are thrift store finds. I look for them all year round. THGGM hates the caroling choir boy candles, and will probably burn them just to get rid of them. They scream 'Christmas!' to me.

Oh. And I tweaked the baby shoes by adding some artificial baby's breath to them.

Look! Look what I found! A very very small pair of ice skates to lean against my Hans Brinker book!
They were unbelievably cheap too. They are in very good condition, so hopefully in a few years Famke can skate around Rosa Park Circle in downtown Grand Rapids with her mommy.
(notice. the skates are up high. this is to prevent the cat from ingesting the holiday finery and then vomiting it onto the skates. slowly, yet surely, i am learning.)

I have that advent calendar!! I even have the little mouse yet. I bought it in 1980 I think from Avon. I have it up again this year, thinking no one cared, but 14 year old has been moving the mouse faithfully each day. Love all of your little scenes (vinyettes is how it's pronounced - but I can't spell it!)

And I have that Advent calendar, too! Avon, isn't it? Mine's packed away SOMEWHERE down in the basement. Maybe next year I'll bring it out when Dylan's a little more aware of what Christmas is.

Beautiful! Love the baby's breath in the shoes. Is that a Menorrah with Christmas bulbs?
I admire all of your beautiful decorating...I love to decorate but DREAD the "un-decorating" that is sure to follow!

oh, Good. I was considering sending you a pair of skates, but the tightwad in me was annoyed at the thought of how much the postage would cost..... How's that for pathetic honesty?!

You certainly have a creative way of putting things together. I am impressed. When I was in Holland once, I a pair of those old dutch speed skates that people used to strap onto their shoes. I wish there was somthing Christmasy I could do with them.

Very festive indeed! Could you share the recipe for the Almond Butter Cake? Sounds delish.
