Six Weird Things About Me
I believe that I have done this one a few times already. There are so many weird things about me, I could join in every hour and not struggle to come up with six.
NUMBER ONE: I have made up so many goofy songs using familiar tunes that I fear when my grandchildren get into a public singing situation they will embarrass themselves when they realize that the 'second verse' is NOT the one Beppe sings! I learned this from my dad, who sang us goofy songs on road trips throughout this great land of ours.
NUMBER TWO: I want to have my cake and eat it too. Although, I had never heard this phrase until THGGM and I were dating. He gave me a card with the punch line of "You can't have your Kate and Edith too" and I did not get it. He loves it when I don't get things.
NUMBER THREE: I have a small collection of very nice jewelry. I wear only my wedding ring and the same pair of earrings. This is because I have a hard time deciding which to wear. I have been trying to wear my watch. Trying. Anyway,..I like how decorative my jewelry looks stuck all over things in my bathroom.
NUMBER FOUR: I tend to only wear blue.
NUMBER FIVE: It's hard for me to enjoy things while I'm doing them. I need to come home and think about what I have done before I know if I had a good time, or not. Usually I did, but it probably doesn't look like it while I'm there. I have a tendency to always look annoyed. I'm not annoyed, I'm just storing information in a complicated system and hoping for easy retrieval at a later date. Blogging helps. You would not believe all of the content in my 'drafts'.
NUMBER SIX: I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but I am seriously agoraphobic. Migraines led me to panic attacks which led me to this lovely state of affairs. It was easy to hide when I could take a kid with me everywhere I went. THGGM is tiring of going to many of my favorite places. Anyway...I am medicated, but for anyone who knows anything about anxiety medications, they cause weight gain. I lost most of my 'safe places' last year so I am working hard at regaining lost ground, and trying to do it without an increase in meds. I am following with great interest reports on increases in migraines in people who spend time under the newer florescent light bulbs. My very first panic attack happened in one of those warehouse type stores, and I have had trouble with panic attacks/migraines in specific places ever since then. Now, just about everywhere I go those types of lights are used. Maybe all I have is florescent-a-phobia: fear of florescent light induced psychosis.
BONUS NUMBER SEVEN: The reason why I haven't said what our new fabulous furniture find is? I cannot believe it is mine until it is actually here and I have posted a picture of it on my blog. We need better weather and a truck to actually get it here.

10 - 20 - 30 Virus

QUICK! What were you doing 10 - 20 - 30 years ago?
TEN YEARS AGO - I was living in the city with THGGM and our three teenagers 13, 15, and 16. Youngest Son was happily attending middle school where he was involved in all sorts of athletic pursuits. Oldest Son was being unschooled, Daughter was being homeschooled. They both had jobs. I remember exactly what I did at that time. I drove. I drove and I drove and I drove and I swore that if the opportunity ever arose I would not have a car and I would never drive. All three kids were involved in community theater. Wednesday was THGGM's day off and for the most part, we escaped from reality and he drove ME interesting places - or to our bi-weekly counceling appointments. We lived directly nextdoor to THGGM's mother and brother. This, my friends, was not a 'good thing'.
TWENTY YEARS AGO - I was living in a different house in the city with THGGM, a first grader and two pre-schoolers. THGGM and I were overly involved in everything. We were still running on the premise that if you weren't insanely busy, you could not possibly be serving God. We were insanely busy. It would be a few years before we held still long enough to be able to hear the 'still small voice' over the 'storm' of activity. Our family spent a conciderable amount of time at beaches, parks, museums and the zoo. I'm thankful that we realized our children needed space, as we packed them tightly into a tiny tiny bedroom. Bunk beds and a pull out mattress, we told ourselves it was 'cozy'. It was in this same bedroom that THGGM's brother died 10 days ago.
THIRTY YEARS AGO - Oh! I was SO happy. Although, you could never tell that by looking at me. But, I was! THGGM and I were engaged! We'd only been dating for four years, so it was about time, although, we were only nineteen years old. THGGM was attending college. I was living at home and working a 2nd shift job that I loved, balancing nightly check runs from several different banks. I could run a Mohawk data entry system, an IBM 129, a paper tape machine, a ten key adding machine and a check sorter. I pretty much spent my nights jumping from one machine to the next. I loved the people I worked with. Yet, I remember hating that they listened to the most horrible country music station. I learned to love the smell of orange pipe tobacco which my boss smoked when things were going well. Forever I will associate the smell of cigeratte smoke with the meaning that 'things are not going well' because he smoked like a chimney then. The women I worked with were all moms who worked part-time. I remember they were called 'the old ladies', although I do remember each one of them turning thirty! Oh, how perspectives change.

Book Meme

What are you reading right now?
- I am reading "Song of Years" by Bess Streeter Aldrich. It has a copyright of 1938. The story takes place in Iowa in the mid 1800's. I'm loosing myself in this one, which is just what I needed!
Do you have any idea what you'll read when you are done with that?
- Hopefully I will get my books unpacked next month. My 'to finish' pile was rather deep, but I might throw all caution and careful planning to the wind and start something new. I've had "That Printer of Udells" setting around for quite some time also.
What magazines do you have in the bathroom right now?
- I keep a drawer/crock full of old Christmas magazines in the bathrooms. I haven't moved them in yet, so all that's there now is Reader's Digest and World Magazine.
What's the worst thing you were ever forced to read?
- I don't remember being forced to read anything. Some books read for classes I didn't enjoy, but my guess is that I would now. Being 'forced' to read is the reason I have never joined a book club. I did force myself to finish a few books that I wish I would have just given up on.
What's the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?
- "The Bird in the Tree" by Elizabeth Goudge. Actually, all three in this trilogy. I love them!
Admit it. The librarians at your library know you on a first name basis, don't they?
- No, they don't. I do believe they knew Oldest Son's name when we were homeschooling, but not mine. I used to read a lot of abnormal psychology, so they were probably a wee bit leery of getting to know me.
Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don't like it at all?
- All of my Leanne Payne (non-fiction) books. I LOVE her books! Can't get anyone else even interested in cracking the cover. Through her I discovered the fiction of Elizabeth Goudge. Any friend of Elizabeth Goudge is a friend of mine!
Do you read books while you do other things?
- I used to read while I held Jonge back when he was Baby Boy. Then, he developed a disliking to my holding books and started swatting them out of my hand. I still have a book about Maria Montessori that I carry around with me to read in waiting rooms or if I get stuck in the car somewhere.
When you were little, did other children tease you about your reading habits?
- Not that I remember. I do remember that I had one neighbor friend who was a game show junky. She could never understand why I would rather read than find out what was behind door number three. But, she didn't tease me.
What's the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn't put it down?
- L.M. Montgomery's "Anne's House of Dreams". I'm not a fan of mysteries, but THIS is a great mystery. It stands alone very well, so one could read it without having read the other 'Anne' books, although, I just cannot imagine NOT want to read the other ones too.

All About THGGM (a meme)
Who is your man? - THGGM. Sometimes I call him "Hon", sometimes, Attila. Other people call him Steve, although many many refer to him as "Eddie".
How long have you been together? - We have been married for 29 years.
How long did you date? - Four years.
How old is your man? - 48 years old. Younger than I am.
Who eats more? - He does, but I run a very close second.
Who said "I love you" first? - He did.
Who is taller? - He is.
Who sings better? - That would be him. But I read music, and he doesn't.
Who is smarter? - He is.
Whose temper is worse? - Mine. I've been known to throw stuff in anger. He stuffs his anger.
Who does the laundry? - We both do. He does it better, because he cares more.
Who does the dishes? - Maytag.
Who pays the bills? - He does.
Who has bigger feet? - Him.
Who has longer hair? - Me.
Who is better with the computer? - He sits at a computer most of the day, and has even taught some classes. When he gets home he does not want to even look at a computer. I guess that means he is better overall, but I am better on this one.
Who mows the lawn? - He does. And he LOVES it. He mows patterns into the grass.
Who cooks dinner? - If dinner is cooked, that would be me. Although, he does know how.
Who pays when you go out? - He does. I get all discombobulated out in public.
Who is most stubborn? Him. Although he would deny it. My answer stands firm.
Who is first to admit when they are wrong? - Him. He even thinks he is wrong when he isn't.
Whose parents do you see the most? - Mine.
Who kissed who first? - He did. March 23, 1974
Who asked who out? - He ask me and a friend both out. The plan was that we were BOTH supposed to say 'yes', and then what would he have done? (ohhh...donna.....you owe me...!)
Who proposed? - I believe I said something like "I'm not waiting forever, you know."
Who is more sensitive? - He is much more of a 'feeler', so I believe the award goes to him. BUT on the other hand, you do not want to mess with me during 'hormone hell' week.
Who has more friends? - He does.
Who wears the pants in the family? - Him. I am his chief cabinet adviser. Anyway, he would look just plain silly in a skirt.

A Big Long Long Meme

Ever thought of just picking up and moving far away? - NO!!!! I am NEVER moving again.
What's the wallpaper on your computer? - A dead fish.
What is the last thing/person you took a picture of? - My Dutch stuff in a cabinet.
What was the most difficult decision you've ever had to make? - I cannot think of a thing.
Name a band/artist you like that isn't popular. - John Denver - or is he popular? I will always love him for "Grandma's Feather Bed".
Can you lift your significant other? - Sometimes I can lift his spirits, but not the six foot two part of him.
What is the first vehicle you recall your parents owning? - A Buick of some sort. When Buick's still had those egg-cuppy things on the sides.
You only have $5 for the whole week; What do you buy with it? - $5? Wow! I can get quite a bit with that at my local thrift store. Books. Probably children's books.
What was the worst job you ever had? - I've never had a really bad job. My least favorite was working at Roger's Department Store. It was dreadfully boring.
Have you ever seen counterfeit money? - I don't think so.
Have you ever lost a pet you were attached to? - Yes. Too many to mention. I still haven't gotten over the loss of Daughter's dog, Max. I miss him everyday, and he wasn't even mine.
You're at an amusement park; What ride do you want to go on first? - How did I get to an amusement park? Yuck. But, I do like the Logger's Run at Michigan's Adventure. Could ride that one ALL day. HAVE ridden that one all day.
You can read minds; Whose mind do you snoop around in first? - My new grand daughter's. I've always wanted to know what a baby is thinking.
What was the most rebellious thing you've ever done? - Rebellious? Me? I quit dotting the letter "i". Still cross the letter "t" though.
Do you ever talk to inanimate objects? - Yes. Frequently.
Pick one; Laundry, Dishes, Vacuuming. - I love to vacuum. THGGM loves to do laundry. The dishes tend to pile up.
Have you ever had to change schools while growing up? - No. I went to the same school system K-12.
You are forced to go out of state; Where do you go? - I would go to Wisconsin. But, let me say it again. I am NEVER going to move again. NEVER.
Name the most meaningful thing a non-relative has done for you. - A friend of mine took me to Gulf Shores, AL with her for ten days. Ten days. It was woooonderfuuuuully relaxing. I'll NEVER forget it.
The highway or back roads take you to the same place; Choose your route. - Back roads there, highway back.
You're going to be a mom/dad. What do you think/do? - Now? At the age of 49? I'd have a lot of 'splainin' to do to THGGM.
Are you more likely to give up or persist when you're having trouble? - That depends. Am I tired?
What's the most challenging thing you've ever over come? - Agoraphobia. Although, I haven't 'over come' yet.
Your best friend needs a kidney to survive; Do you give them one of yours? - I do not think they would want a diabetic kidney. Although, they do both work very well.
Your brother breaks into your house; Do you press charges? - I do not have a brother. But, if anyone broke into my house I would press charges.
Name a big life event that has taken place for you within the last two years. - I've become a grandma! Twice!
Do you end up regretting things you say often? - What do I say often?
Would you rather have a huge cat or a tiny dog? - I have a huge cat. THGGM wants a tiny dog.
Pringles or Lay's Stax? - Bleeeeeech.
Name one difficult lesson you've learned. - Never try to homeschool a kid who does not want to be homeschooled.
Name one thing you look forward to in old age. - Great Grandchildren. I'm never satisfied.
Do you use your hands when you talk to emphasize what you are saying? - Thanks to "Signing Time" I use my hands all the time when I talk. Besides that, I'm Dutch and we tend to do that a
lot.
You own a huge business; What is it? - "Judy's Old Book Emporium and Assorted Other Junk". It's at my house.
Are you afraid to ask for help when you know that you need it? - Yes.
Should adoptive kids be allowed to find their birth parents if they want to? - I don't know. THGGM thought of officially finding his biological father. But, then his biological father died.
Name somebody you think died before their time. - My brother-in-law. He was the age I am now.
A friend is (rightly) suspected in a crime; Do you provide an alibi? - No. That would make me a criminal. THGGM was just on a jury for a case like this.
Name the possession you've had the longest. - A necklace of a Dutchman my grandpa brought back from a trip to The Netherlands. At least I THINK I still have it. In a box in the garage...
You're writing a novel; Is it horror, mystery, romance, etc. - It's hysterical fiction.
You have a deep dark secret; Do you tell anyone? - No.
Will you usually admit it when you've made a mistake? - Yes. I'm not finding that so difficult anymore. Making mistakes is a daily occurrence.
A friend of yours has a drug addiction; Do you tell someone? - Only if it was someone who would help. I would not just 'tell someone' for the sake of telling someone.

What was the worst job you ever had? - I've never had a really bad job. My least favorite was working at Roger's Department Store. It was dreadfully boring.

Have you ever lost a pet you were attached to? - Yes. Too many to mention. I still haven't gotten over the loss of Daughter's dog, Max. I miss him everyday, and he wasn't even mine.
You're at an amusement park; What ride do you want to go on first? - How did I get to an amusement park? Yuck. But, I do like the Logger's Run at Michigan's Adventure. Could ride that one ALL day. HAVE ridden that one all day.

What was the most rebellious thing you've ever done? - Rebellious? Me? I quit dotting the letter "i". Still cross the letter "t" though.

Name the most meaningful thing a non-relative has done for you. - A friend of mine took me to Gulf Shores, AL with her for ten days. Ten days. It was woooonderfuuuuully relaxing. I'll NEVER forget it.

For Me, a MEME From Me

Seven Facts about Me. Me, the boring one. Seven. Seven boring facts about me, then.
1. I love dandelions. Love them. I think they are beautiful. NOTHING is sweeter than a chubby fist full of dandelions. Today, I 'reseeded' my meadow of dandelions in the back yard by kicking off their billowy heads. It looked like snow. Baby Boy loved it, too.
2. I worry about the mother robin and her nest of eggs outside my closet window. She appears to be a single mom. There is no mate sitting in the tree, waiting to relieve her. I think that is very sad.
3. I haven't read a book all month. Except for children's books and Baby Boy's favorites. I thought I might read while I was sick, but all I did was sleep. I want to finish "The Bell Jar", and then I have Sylvia Plath's journals to work through. Yet, when I pick it up I just cannot do it. I might need something 'lighter' for the summer. It isn't like I don't have hundreds of books on hand...
4. I can pick any year of my life and go back to a specific memory from that time. It just seems such a waste to have lived life with portions of it unremembered and unaccounted for.
5. When I was in kindergarten, a friend of mine wet his pants. When his brother came to pick him up (he was a third-grader) he kindly removed his own sweater and wrapped it around his embarrassed brother and told him that no one would even notice. From that point on, I wished I had a brother. I thought they were wonderful. I still pass the store this brother owns, and I always remember what a remarkable person I thought he was, even in the third grade.
6. I'm starting to like the color combination of aqua and red. Just a year ago, I hated it. This is proof to me that I am still capable of change.
7. I once bought a mug at the thrift store because it matched one I had. When I got it home, I realized it WAS that mug. I had recently carted it off to the thrift store. Saturday, THGGM bought one of his shirts back from the same thrift store - on purpose. He just decided he still liked it.
There you go. Seven more boring things about me. There are MANY more, but, I wouldn't want to bore you...oh...wait...I would.
Now I'm supposed to tag seven people.

I've seen this on several other blogs, and found it interesting! So, here is my take on THGGM

How long have you been together? - We have been married 28 years.
How long did you know each other before you got together? - I first laid eyes on him in the sixth grade. We started dating at 15 and dated 4 years before we were married.
What physical features first attracted you to him? - His tall, blond, blue-eyed Dutchness
His eye color? - Blue
His hair color? - Blond
How did you meet? - I knew him from school, but really got to know him in Spanish Class. (Me llamo Judita. Donde es el bano?)
How serious is it? - Oh, it's serious.
Are you 'in love'? - Some days yes, some days it's a good thing we take our vows seriously. We are committed to loving each other for better or worse. It's harder, but longer lasting.
Do your parents like him? - My parents think he is wonderful.
Do you trust him? - As much as I trust any human being that I love. I have learned that it is more important to trust God.
Would you share a toothbrush with him? - No. I love him right up to the moon and back, but I would not WILLINGLY share a toothbrush. And bless him for feeling the same way!
Would he let you wear his pants? - The man has no butt. Once, he did hand a pair of pants to me and ask if I would 'stretch them out' for him.
Does he smoke or do drugs? - No. Although an antacid bottle sits on his nightstand. Funny, how what sits on the nightstand changes over time.
Do you have a shirt of his that you sleep in? - I did. But then he wore it to paint in.
Do you like the way he smells? - Yes. He has NEVER smelled bad in his life. Except for once, when he stepped on a rotten egg while we were walking along a river. THAT was bad!

What bothers you the most about him? - His need to sleep with a fan on. I've promised that I would hum softly until he falls asleep, but he insists upon the fan.

High School Meme
Year of High School Graduation - 1976
1. Who was you best friend?
My best friend in high school was THGGM. Although then he was just TBFGGM.
2. What sports did you play?
None. Unless "Hard to Get" is a sport.
3. What kind of car did you drive?
I occasionally took my dad's '66 Buick LeSabre to school.
4. It's Friday night, where were you?
Football game, Basketball game or working.
5. Were you a party animal?
No. I have NEVER liked parties.
6. Where you in the "In Crowd"?
I don't think so. THGGM thinks I was. It was a very small high school with only 100 in our graduating class.
7. Ever skip school?
No. But we did do something called "selling advertising" for journalism/yearbook class which was about the same as skipping!
8. Ever smoke?
No.
9. Were you a nerd?
No.
10. Did you get suspended/expelled?
No.
11. Can you sing the alma mater?
Yes, I can. Sometimes I still sing it just for fun. (if i wasn't a nerd then, i certainly am now)

I would love to relive 9-11 grade. My senior year was just too emotional for me. I haven't recovered from it yet. We did not attend our 30 year reunion this year because I could not stand the thought of reliving that year.

How HOT it was.

I had a great schedule. I do remember that! All through high school I had choir first hour. Truly, starting out every day singing was a great experience.

If that means 'honor roll', yes.

IMMEDIATELY after graduation? THGGM and I went out for ice cream with my mom and dad. The next day I went to my full time job at Systematics, doing data entry. I LOVED it.

The A B C's of Homemaking

A - Aprons? Y/N? YES! I LOVE aprons. I rarely wear mine though. My three favorites are hanging on an old wooden ironing board my friend Pat gave me. One is canvas which I plan to stitch on, one is a vintage Christmas scene, and one reminds me of the one my grandma used to wear.
B - Favorite thing to Bake? Chocolate chip cookies, the recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook. But, I substitute the shortening for 11 T. butter, and add a half cup of chocolate malted milk powder.
C - Clothes lines? Y/N? YES! My backyard has three. I love to hang out sheets, towels and Baby Boy's blankets in all but the dead of winter.
D - Donuts. Have you ever made them? I USED to. Now I let Marge at Marge's Donut Den make them. She's much better at it than I am.
E - What is one household chore you do every day? I fluff stuff and straighten chairs. I could leave huge piles of books and magazines all over, but a smooshed pillow makes me crazy.
F - Do you have a separate deep freeze? Y/N? Yes. It is in the garage, unplugged.
G - Do you have a garbage disposal? Y/N? Yes. It is one of my favorite things. Before we had a garbage disposal, I flushed everything.
H - Handbook? What is your favorite Homemaking reference? Don Aslet's books. I love them.
I - Ironing. Love it, or hate it? I hate it. THGGM loves it. If he needs to relax, he will sometimes pull out all of the linen napkins and iron them.
J - Junk Drawer? Y/N? Where is it? I believe I have at least one junk drawer in every room. My life is in those drawers. When THGGM moves end tables around, I have been known to pull out pictures to see what tables used to be where, just so I can find what I need. (junk. i need junk. i don't know why, but i do.)
K - Kitchen color and decorating scheme? My kitchen has white cupboards and white appliances. The wallpaper (our only room with wallpaper) is a white background with pale blue, red and yellow plaid. It hopefully has somewhat of a vintage 40's feel. That's what I'm going for, anyway.
L - Love? Your favorite part of homemaking? Hanging sheets and towels on the line. I LOVE that smell!
M - Mop? Y/N? THGGM mops. I swiffer.
N - Nylons? Wash by hand or in machine? I have not pulled on a pair of pantyhose since Daughter's wedding on January 2, 2003. I will wear them again when Youngest Son marries.
O - Oven. Do you use the window or open the door? I open the door. Often.
P - Pizza. What do you put on yours? On mine all I want is pepperoni and mushrooms.
Q - Quiet. What do you do when you get a quiet moment? When I get a quiet moment, I nap with Baby Boy.
R - Recipe Box? Y/N? Yes! My recipe box looks like a little house. I like it so much that I just bought another one that looks just like it.
S - Style of house? I live in a craftsmen style house.
T - Table clothes and Napkins? Y/N? YES! A lacy tablecloth and linen napkins are my personal favorites.
U - Under the kitchen sink, is it organized or a toxic wasteland? Under my kitchen sink it is a toxic wasteland. It's where everything chemical that we don't know what to do with gets stored.
V - Vacuum. How often? Vacuuming is something that I really like to do. I rarely put my vacuum away. And now, I put it by things I don't want Baby Boy to get into, because he is afraid of it.
W - Wash? How many loads per week? I do six loads most weeks.
X - X's - Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off? No. I keep a permanent list which I revue. I hate to cross things off. It seems a waste if you are always doing the same thing. I USED to keep many lists, but I tend to be obsessive compulsive and the lists just fed that.
Y - Yard. Who does what? THGGM does what. He loves to mow. He loves to mow pattern's. I like to rake and I used to enjoy pulling weeds. Now that I no longer have a dog, it seems lonely out there all alone.
Z - Zzzz. What is the last homemaking task you do before going to bed? Three things. I feed the cat, check all of the doors and set the coffee maker.

V - Vacuum. How often? Vacuuming is something that I really like to do. I rarely put my vacuum away. And now, I put it by things I don't want Baby Boy to get into, because he is afraid of it.
W - Wash? How many loads per week? I do six loads most weeks.
X - X's - Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off? No. I keep a permanent list which I revue. I hate to cross things off. It seems a waste if you are always doing the same thing. I USED to keep many lists, but I tend to be obsessive compulsive and the lists just fed that.
Y - Yard. Who does what? THGGM does what. He loves to mow. He loves to mow pattern's. I like to rake and I used to enjoy pulling weeds. Now that I no longer have a dog, it seems lonely out there all alone.
Z - Zzzz. What is the last homemaking task you do before going to bed? Three things. I feed the cat, check all of the doors and set the coffee maker.

MEME - Six MORE Weird Things about Me

1. I crave silence. I love music, but I would rather just hear it from memory in my head than put in a CD.
2. I have a mad crush on "Bob the Builder". He is just SO confident. He says "Can we fix it? Yes we can!" Around here I say "Can you fix it?" and THGGM says "Do we have to talk about this now?"
3. I can only fall asleep at night if I read something first. Then, I will sleep until THGGM wakes me up.
4. I have no idea what clothes I have. I wear what appears at the top of the pile. Sometimes I see pictures of me, and I wonder...'what happened to that shirt?' It's usually at the bottom of the pile. When I keep up on laundry, this means I wear the same things over and over again. If I don't keep up, I have an interesting variety of weird stuff to wear until the pile runs out.
5. I've been told that I need to speak up even when I don't feel like I have anything of importance to say. I found this a shocking thought. I do believe that this blog proves that I can now speak rather ineloquently about unimportant things. Apparently, I was told, people found me intimidating because when I did talk, it was always profound.

That thought makes me gasp with laughter. I assure you, I am NOT profound.
6. I get panic attacks in warehouse style stores. Something about the lights, I believe. I cannot remember the last time I hopped in the car and went to a large grocery store on my own. If I did, I'm sure I would be on the 11:00 news as the lady who went insane in the store and crashed her cart through several plate glass windows while screaming "I can't breathe!".
